Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, adopted the motion targeted at curbing the proliferation of firearms in Nigeria.

The lawmakers yesterday March 10 attributed the recent spike in rates of violence in the country to the proliferation of fire arms in the country and mandated its committees on national security and intelligence and police affairs to liaise with relevant security agencies and other stakeholders to device means of curbing the trend, National Mirror reports.

This followed a motion on “ The Need to Intensify Efforts to Check Illegal Possession of Firearms Across the Country”, brought by Odebunmi Oluesegun Dokun.

Dokun said the high rate of illegal possession of firearms by individuals and groups in had contributed to the the high rate of insecurity and crime in the country.
He expressed concern about the proliferation and high rate of illegal possession of firearms by individuals and groups in violation of Sections 3, 4, 8, 11, & 12 of the Fire Arms Act, a situation he said contributes to the high rate of insecurity and crime in the country.

He lamented that several efforts at recovering those firearms from people possessing them illegally had yielded little or no results as they were either abandoned or the firearms later found their ways back into the hands of those from whom they were recovered.

Dokun said the need to recover those weapons from the public played a crucial role in guaranteeing the security of lives and properties in the country.

The motion was consequently adopted by the speaker, Yakubu Dogara, who presided over the session.

Meanwhile, the Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, seeks to inform the wider Nigerian public that as a firm believer in rule of law, he intends to totally submit himself to the due process of the law as the trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) begins today, Friday, March 11, 2016.

In a statement signed by Hon. Gbenga Makanjuola, the deputy chief of staff to the President of the Senate, Saraki and his team of lawyers have earlier submitted an application to quash the illegitimate suit being brought against him before the CCT based on several alleged discrepancies found in his asset declaration form.
