The Nigerian Army has disclosed how an army officer suspected to be a major and one soldier were shot dead on Thursday, March 17, in Abonnema in Akuku-Toru local government area of Rivers state.
The army said gunmen suspected to be sea pirates killed an officer and a soldier in Abonemma, Akukutoru LGA of Rivers state
According to a statement released by Captain Eli Lazarus, the assistant director of army public relations for the 2nd Brigade stationed in Port Harcourt, the attack occurred at 11am today, when the soldiers were on patrol, according to Sahara Reporters.
“About 11:00 am today Thursday 17 March 16, troops on Patrol in Abonema, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State had a fierce encounter with a group of unknown gunmen suspected to be sea pirates. Our men displayed extraordinary gallantry.
“Unfortunately, an officer and a soldier who sustained various degrees of injury during the encounter lost their lives,” Captain Eli Lazarus stated.
He however said the army was in pursuit of the criminals and promised get them. The statement urged law abiding citizens to remain calm and go about their lawful activities.
Lazarus said the army would “continue to make necessary sacrifices to ensure sustainable peace and security of lives and property of everyone in the state”.
Meanwhile, the Theater Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Northeast, Major General Hassan Umaru has handed over the mantle of leadership of the command to Major General Lucky E. Irabor.
Maj-Gen Hassan handed over to Irabor who was his deputy commander, at a taking-over ceremony which held at Maimalari cantonment in Maiduguri.
The out going commander said his transfer to the Nigerian army headquarters was to take over as the Chief of Training and Operations after the demise of Major General Yushau Abubakar Mahmood who died recently in a road accident along Maiduguri-Damaturu road on an official assignment.
