Chibudom Nwuche, a former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, has begged President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene and avert further loss of lives in Rivers state.
The Punch reports that Nwuche appealed to the president while briefing journalists on Sunday, March 13, in Abuja.
The ex-deputy speaker made a statement reacting to the rising spate of killings, beheadings, assaults, rape and other criminal activities in the state. He also faulted claims that the killings were cult-related.
“Who are these cultists? Do they include the hundreds of victims of such heinous crimes as hordes of defenceless aged men and women killed in Omoku and the 14 persons recently murdered in cold blood at Ula Upata, Ahoda East local government area?” he said.
Nwuche wondered why most, if not all, of the victims are members or supporters of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
The ex-lawmaker noted that violent crimes were threatening the peace and stability of the state. He added that the penetrators of these heinous crimes have grounded the social and economic life in the area, making life more difficult for the already traumatized people.
“The level of crime in Rivers state is astronomically high. It is epidemic, ranging from assassination, kidnapping, rape, extortion, armed robbery and kidnapping, among several other heinous crimes,” he said.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Senate Mohammed Ali Ndume has condemned Governor Nyesom Wike for the incessant killings of innocent people of Rivers state.
“Any breakdown of law and order there the governor is supposed to be held responsible. The people of Rivers should hold him responsible,” he said.
However, Wike has dismissed allegations that recent killings in the state have been politically motivated and targeted at members of the APC. According to him, the recent killings are clashes of rival cult groups fighting for supremacy.
