Unknown people have killed a top Fulani herdsman in Ilara-Mokin, Ifededore local government area in Ondo state Dan Bako, averting a big ethnic crisis.
Dan Bako had reportedly gone missing for days before his corpse was found in a bush. A full blown crisis was quickly stopped as policemen were deployed to the region.
Farmers said they knew nothing about his death.
A source said: “The rumor filtering into the town that the deceased must have been killed by farmers in the village is a blatant lie sponsored to cause inter-ethnic war in our community and the State at large. We are peace-loving people and many of them have been living with us here for the past eight years.”
“We don’t know anything about the death of the Fulani herdsman. I learned that his dead body was found in a bush today. Some days ago he had been declared missing by some members of his family,” another source added.
The farmer clarified that the village came together to search for Bako.
He continued: “ My uncle who is a cassava farmer even volunteered to join the search party put together by the heads of the Fulani that came to sympathize with the people of the village. Every nook and cranny of the community was thoroughly searched but nothing was found until today.”
Hilda Ibifuro-Hallison, state police commissioner, who was speaking about the development, said police have been deployed to the community to prevent the breakdown of law and order.
Fulani herdsmen have recently extended their tendencies to Taraba state, a place known for its peacefulness and dependence on agriculture.
The herdsmen attacked Angai and Ndole villages in the Gashak local government area of the state, killing at least 44 people, while razing down houses and livestock.
