Major timber market razed in Nassarawa state.
The Punch reports that about 20 shops were razed in a major timber market on Saturday, January 9.

Some of the eyewitnesses, who did not want their names to be mentioned, said the fire outbreak began around 1am, razing about 20 shops and destroying properties worth millions of Naira.
“The effort by the residents of the area to put off the fire was not successful and the State Fire Service men arrived the scene with empty tanks.

“The level of destruction is so devastating,” the witnesses disclosed.
While confirming the incident in Lafia, the state chief fire officer, Dogara Dalhatu, said the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Dalhatu however, stressed that contrary to some rumours,  it was not true that fire fighters came with empty tanks.

There have been a series of fire outbreaks recorded in recent times. Only recently, an early morning inferno reportedly razed sections of the `Pipeline Timber Market’ in Benin city, the Edo state capital.
Precious Emmanuel, an eyewitness, said the inferno started around 3am. He said it was the swift response of the fire service officials that saved sections of the market from being destroyed utterly.
