Two days after the bloody Zaria clashes between Nigerian troops and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, a group who is poised to propagate Shi’ite Islam, which has so far led to several deaths, Nigeria authority is yet to issue a statement on the killings.
When would President Buhari break this long silence?
According to reports, about 100 Shi’ite members had been killed in an overnight raid allegedly carried out by the Nigeria army.
It was also reported that the Nigeria Shi’ite leader, Sheik Ibrahim Zakzaky’s wife and son might have been killed.
Though, the army had earlier stated what transpired that led to the clashes. The acting director of the army public relations, Col. Sani Usman said that the sect allegedly blocked roads and did not allow other passers-by to go about their normal duties. The army also alleged that the Shi’ite members attempted to assassinate the chief of army staff, Lieutenant General TY Buratai.
An allegation that had been dismissed by the sect spokesman, Ibrahim Musa who accused the troops of killing it members discriminately.
The army and the sect had been trading blames on who started the provocation with both side agreeing that lives were loss.
It was observed that no arm of the Nigerian government has so far condemned the attack or provided insight to what actually happened on that fateful day.
Also, spokesmen of President Muhamamadu Buhari or other agencies of the government had not issued any kind of statement on the current impasses.
Premium Times stated that request for comment to the special senior assistant on media to Buhari, Garba Shehu, was not successful.
However, the group had so far berated the silence of constituted authorities on what it described as the ‘massacred of it armless and helpless members’.
It therefore called on the army authority to give access to its arrested leader, Zakzaky, whom it said was shot and sustained injury during the raid.
In a related development, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, had warned President Buhari and his government over killing in Zaria, Kaduna state.
