Fresh information obtained from Niger government, claims that 18 people, including a local religious leader, has been killed by gunmen belonging to the dreaded Boko Haram sect.
The disclosure which was made on Thursday, November 26, reveals that the insurgents carried out an attack on a village in Niger’s southern border area of Diffa.
Security sources say the gunmen arrived in the village of Gogone which lays near the shores of Lake Chad on foot.
They informed that the jihadist fired sporadically on residents, raiding their homes.
According to Reuters, the daredevil Islamist also assaulted the residents with rockets.
Justice Minister, Marou Amadou, said: “ Boko Haram has once again sent us into mourning”.
The government spokesman affirmed that “Eighteen villagers were killed, including the chief imam for the village whose throat was slit by his own nephew.”
Amadou further revealed that eleven people were injured and a three-year-old girl has disappeared.
He said that the army was pursuing the “terrorists in all nooks and crannies of Lake Chad”.
Though the sect’s stronghold is in the northeast of Nigeria, yet it often launches cross border attacks in Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
In a bid to boost Niger security, a state of emergency has been declared. However, the insurgents often manage to flee across the border via the Komadougou river.
Meanwhile, following a recent attack by the jihadist in Borno state, the government has reportedly retrieved and buried 81 corpses.
